Gibson began making and writing her own music in the years before being featured in the Billboard Hot 100. Her demo tape was discovered in the hands of a well-known radio host when she was only 14. The DJ shared it with an executive at Atlantic Records and her original track "Only in My Dreams" led to her securing a development deal immediately. She started a promotional tour of venues across the United States. She spent most of 1986 and 1987 constructing her songwriting catalog as she continued to tour venues. Debbie's mother would accompany Debbie to her club dates. She continued her classes at Calhoun High School, Merrick, New York, simultaneously. She later graduated as an honors student.
